Haiphong

 

a city in Vietnam, located in the delta of the Hong Ha (Red River) on the Kinh Mon River, which empties into the Gulf of Tonkin (Bac Bo) of the South China Sea. Population, 1.2 million (1974). Founded in the 1870’s, Haiphong is a seaport and fishing center. It is linked with Hanoi by railroad and highway and served by the Catby airport. The city is a major trade and industrial center, with enterprises of the cement, textile, metalworking, and food and condiment industries, as well as shipyards and automotive repair shops. Traditional handicrafts are also practiced.
