Hammadah al-Hamra, al-

 

a desert plateau in northwestern Libya, in Tripolitania. Al-Hammadah al-Hamra extends approximately 700 km from west to east and approximately 200 km from north to south. It is composed of limestones and has an elevation of 450–500 m. The plateau ends abruptly in the south and at the Jabal Nafusah escarpment in the north.
