From its inception, the CHIPS motto has been to "Share Information, Technology, Experience." Early editions of CHIPS featured instructions for such software applications as dBase and
Harvard Graphics and user forums for government off-the-shelf software (GOTS) and the Ada programming language.
Most of the technical information is of a general nature and relevant to the users of other software programs such as Lotus,
Harvard Graphics and Apple Keynote.

While some graphics-specific software packages exist (e.g., Freelance Graphics and
Harvard Graphics), most CPA firms and many accounting departments may only have access to a basic spreadsheet package - e.g., Lotus, Excel, or Quattro Pro.
Previously, information was collected from any available source, reports from the Hospital Information System, chart review, and California Office of Statewide Planning (OSHPD) and entered manually into graphics programs like
Harvard Graphics or Excel.
A primary advantage of using such presentation graphics packages as PowerPoint or
Harvard Graphics is that a hard copy of all overheads for a particular class session or for the semester can be made available to students at the start of class.
