Hayes, Isaac Israel
(1832–81) physician, Arctic explorer; born in Chester County, Pa. He was the surgeon for Elisha Kent Kane's second Arctic expedition (1853–54) and wrote An Arctic Boat Journey (1860). He led another Arctic expedition (1860–61) and served as an army surgeon in Philadelphia during the Civil War. He made a third Arctic expedition in 1869 and gave an accurate description of Greenland in The Land of Desolation (1871).
