Heiberg, Gunnar Edvard Rode

 

Born Nov. 18, 1857, in Christiania (Oslo); died there Feb. 22, 1929. Norwegian playwright and critic.

In his social drama Aunt Ulrikke (1884), Heiberg attacked bourgeois morality, and in the drama The Big Win (1895) he portrayed a revolutionary corrupted by wealth. The drama The Tragedy of Love (1904), which is replete with obscure symbols, combines elements of naturalism and impressionism. Some of Heiberg’s critical essays are collected in Ibsen and Björnson on the Stage (1918) and Norwegian Theater (1920).
