Heteropoda

a group of gastropod mollusks of the subclass Streptoneura; it is sometimes considered an order. They are free-swimming pelagic organisms which measure up to 10 cm long (rarely up to 50 cm). The shell of many species is reduced. The foot forms a ventral outgrowth, or a keeled fin, which serves as the organ of locomotion and is directed upward during movement. Heteropoda are predatory and have well-developed sense organs. These mollusks are found in tropical and subtropical seas and oceans with considerable salinity. In the USSR they are found only in the southern parts of Far Eastern seas.
