Jens Baggesen wrote the libretto for Holger Danske in 1739, an opera which made nationalism and orientalism merge in surprising ways.
In the catacombs you'll find Danish hero Holger Danske who's honoured by a sleeping statue.
Later, after his libretto for the first Danish opera, Holger Danske, received adverse criticism, mainly because of its supposed lack of nationalism, Baggesen traveled through Germany, Switzerland, and France.
Most of his works have not won enduring acclaim, but Morgen og aftensange (1837-39; "Morning and Evening Songs") and his patriotic verse cycle Holger Danske (1837; "Holger the Dane") are much admired in Denmark.
