Carter, Howard

 

Born May 9, 1873, in Swaffham, Norfolk; died Mar. 2, 1939, in London. British archaeologist.

Carter did his first excavations in Egypt in 1891 in the vicinity of Tell el-Amarna and at other sites of Upper Egypt. In 1902 he began conducting excavations in the Valley of the Kings. In 1922 he discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen, a pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty (15th century b.c.), in which many art remains were found.
