Most of the study is organized topically, with individual chapters on magnetic tape, ferrite-core memories, disk storage, programming, and transistors, By far the strongest and most interesting chapters, however, are those focusing on particular machines, such as the Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator of the late 1940s, the Defense Calculator of 1950-51, and the IBM 700 series of computers of the mid-1950s.
