Iaia

 

an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of Iaia Raion, Kemerovo Oblast, RSFSR. Iaia is situated on the Iaia River of the Ob’ River basin. It is served by a railroad station on the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Industrial enterprises include a logging combine, a tractor repair plant, and a sawmill for the production of staves and other wood products. Iaia also has a brewery for the production of beer and nonalcoholic beverages and a garment factory.

a river in Kemerovo and Tomsk oblasts, RSFSR; a left tributary of the Chulym River of the Ob’ River basin. The Iaia is 380 km long and drains an area of 11,700 sq km. It rises in the foothills of the Kuznetskii Alatau. The river is fed mainly by snow. The mean flow rate 22 km from the mouth is 88.5 cu m per sec. The river freezes over in early November, and the ice breaks up in April; Aufeis formations are frequent in winter. The Iaia is used for timber flotation and is navigable for 114 km from its mouth.
