Location:From Lockport in the east to LaSalle, parallel to the Illinois River. The I & M Canal Visitor Center is located in the historic Gaylord Building, 200 West 8th Street, Lockport.
Activities:Hiking, bicycling, snowmobiling.
Special Features:Trail follows the historic route of the I & M Canal, which was built between 1836 and 1848 and became the final link in an all-water route between the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Completion of the canal helped transofrm Illinois from a sparsely settled wilderness to a prosperous, populous state.
