In 1859, earliest forms of static indentation tests were introduced.4 Indentation tests are generally based on the formation of indentation on the surface of a metal or ceramic and hardness is established by gauging the perpetual depth of the indentation and the applied load.5 Generally, the
indentation hardness may be described in terms of plastic and, to a lesser extent, the elastic properties of the metal or ceramic concerned.
Figure 2a/b shows the Vickers Hardness HV (calculated from the
indentation hardness HIT) and the indentation modulus EIT of two coatings--a hard anodised coating (480 HV) of 11 [micro]m thickness (shown in red) and a soft anodised coating of 14 [micro]m thickness (shown in blue).
Both the modulus and
indentation hardness are highly dependent on the stiffness of contact, the contact area and the precision with which they are attached.
The resultant plots of indentation versus temperature or time can be used to measure
indentation hardness, elastic modulus, and creep as well as softening points and thermal expansion coefficients.
