The
intercooler imposes a flow restriction on the induction system, causing a pressure drop across the flow resistance of the
intercooler.
The
intercooler fans start running when the inlet air temperature is above 40[degrees]C and the fan speed can be controlled following a similar function:
Interestingly, although additive manufacturing has previously been used in Formula 1, the current project is unique due to the large scale and cross flow nature of a car
intercooler.
On the pressure side of the compressor, a manifold casting and
intercooler mount casting had to be produced that met the space limitations of the design.
For the
intercooler's inlet/outlet pipes, previously cast from aluminum, the material provides heat and hydrolysis resistance, just as it does for the radiator's header tank, for which it was already in use.
Johansson also characterised the
intercooler order as a breakthrough.
It is powered by a four-cylinder engine with a Borg-Warner supercharger and
intercooler system.
However, to meet the increasing demand from diesel customers, Mitsubishi is also introducing its first common-rail direct injection diesel engine for passenger cars, a 1.9 litre turbocharger, with
intercooler direct-injection diesel, fourcylinder engine.
The engine features electronically controlled fuel injection and an
intercooler. It is thermostatically controlled and has a variable speed hydraulically driven fan that uses power only when required.
The high-octane flagship model uses a state-of-the-art supercharger and
intercooler to squeeze 163bhp out of the traditional four-cylinder engine.
