Leonard Kleinrock standing next to IMPAugust 29, 1969 the first network switch and the first piece of network equipment called "IMP", which is short for (Interface Message Processor) is sent to UCLA.
The NBS Experimental Computer Facility hosted the 6th ARPA Net node--a terminal interface message processor. By the end of the 1970s the geographically distributed resource sharing ARPA Network computers sometimes stopped functioning, but the technology was demonstrable.
The computers, called Interface Message Processors, (IMPs) were Honeywell DDP-516 minicomputers remodeled by Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc, with 12K of memory, connected with 50 kbps lines from AT&T Corp.
