Interlaken

 

a city in Switzerland in the canton of Bern. Population, approximately 5,000. Interlaken is situated at an elevation of 567 m above sea level in an intermontane hollow of the Bernese Alps, on the Aar River, between Lakes Thun and Brienz. A picturesque view of the snowy Jungfrau peak opens up from Interlaken. It is a seasonal, mainly summer, resort and a center of tourism; it is also an important international transportation junction. Food, textile, and woodworking enterprises are located in the city. Interlaken arose in the 12th century.
