Galiatovskii, Ioannikii

 

Date of birth unknown; died Jan. 2 (12), 1688. Ukrainian writer and clergyman.

Galiatovskii studied at the Kiev-Mogilev Collegium. In 1688 he became the father superior and later the archimandrite of the Elets Monastery in Chernigov. He wrote a collection of sermons entitled Key to Understanding (1659) and the book of legends New Heaven (1665); the former contains a treatise on the art of church rhetoric (“Science or Manner of Composing Sermons”). Galiatovskii influenced the development of the moralizing homily in the Ukraine. His theological polemical works in Ukrainian and Polish are directed against Catholicism, Uniatism, and Islam.
