In southwestern WI, west of Madison; organized Oct 9, 1829 (prior to statehood) from a territorial county. Name Origin: For either the Iowa River, or the Iowa Indians. Name is a French version of the Dakota name for the tribe, variously Ayuhwa, Ouaouia, Aiouez, and Ioways 'the sleepy ones.'
