Venette, Jean de

 

(nickname of Jean Fillon), Born circa 1307, in Venette, near Compiegne; died circa 1370. French chronicler.

Of peasant origin, Jean de Venette became a Carmelite monk. His Latin chronicle deals with events in northeastern France in the period 1340 to 1368. Describing the Jacquerie, he sharply criticized the gentry, considering them to be the source of all the misfortunes of the land. He was also the author of the Chronicle of the Carmelites and of a religious poem written in Old French.
