Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish & Wildlife Area
Location:Cass County in west central Illinois, 25 miles northwest of Springfield off IL 125.
Facilities:84 Class A and AA campsites (all but 19 have electricity),
9 cabins, equestrian campground (51 sites with electricity), primitive camping
area, shower building, picnic areas, restrooms, shelters,
hiking/jogging trails (3 miles), equestrian trail (26 miles), mountain
bike/hiking trail (24 miles).
Activities:Camping, boating, sailing, canoeing, fishing, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, hunting.
Special Features:At 26 square miles, site is Department of Natural Resource's largest
block of property. It is composed of rolling hills with mature forest,
agricultural fields, and grasslands, and dissected by Panther and Cox
creeks and their tributaries. The area is home to a rich assortment of
wildlife, including the Indiana bat, northern harrier, and
red-shouldered hawk--all endangered species--and game species such as
the white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ring-neck pheasant, and mourning
dove.
