Jnanesvar

 

(Jnanadeva). Born 1271; died 1296. Marathi (India) poet and religious reformer. Jnanesvar was the author of Vaishnavite religious lyrics. His principal work was the Jnanesvari, a paraphrase in old Marathi of the Bhagavad Gita accompanied by his own commentary. The work is the object of special reverence among the Marathi. Jnanesvar is among the first writers of bhaletic literature.
