Kairakkum

Kairakkum

 

a city (settlement until 1963) in Leninabad Oblast, Tadzhik SSR; situated on the bank of the Kairakkum Reservoir, 8 km from the Leninabad railroad station on the Khavast-Kokand line. Population, 10, 000 (1970). It is the site of the Kairakkum Hydroelectric Power Plant. Kairakkum has carpet, flour milling, and house-building combines, a reinforced-concrete structural components plant, and a fishing industry. A house of rest and a tourist center are also located there.

This year work will begin on the modernization of the Kairakkum hydropower plant in the amount of 1.9 billion somoni, and the first stage of reconstruction of the Nurek hydropower plant in the amount of 3.5 billion somoni.
In Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in the winter water was accumulated in the reservoirs of Nurek, Toktogul and Kairakkum and in summer it was dumped for irrigation of arable land in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
