Karlovo

 

(from 1953 to 1962, Levskigrad), a city in southernBulgaria, in the Karlovo Basin between the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) and the Sredna Gora Range in Plovdiv District.Population, 23, 000 (1970). It is the center of a region of cultiva-tion and processing of essential-oil crops (production of rosesand lavender oils and mint). Other industry includes machine-building (Bulgar light caterpillar tractors), the production ofcotton and silk cloth, and food processing. A balneologicalhealth resort is located in Karlovo, and tourism is well devel-oped. Karlovo is the birthplace of the Bulgarian revolutionaryV. Levski.

The results of the ambient air quality measurements from the mobile automatic station (MAS) installed in Karlovo after yesterday's fire at the landfill did not show elevated levels, said the press office of the regional environment inspectorate a Plovdiv.
