Karlstad

a city and port in Sweden, on the northern shoreof Vänern, at the mouth of the Klar River. Karlstad is theadministrative center of the county of Värmland. Population, 54, 000 (1970). The city’s principal industries are machine build-ing (aircraft and turbine construction; paper-making machines), light industry, and the food industry. Karlstad is the terminalpoint of a timber-flotation route. There is a large timber industrycombine near Karlstad, on Hammar Island. Timber, cellulose, paper, and machines are exported from Karlstad. There is a university branch in the city. [11–1312^]
