Kartchner Caverns State Park
Location:9 miles south of I-10, off AZ 90, exit 302.
Facilities:60 campsites, electric hookups, showers, restrooms, picnic areas,
picnic shelters, hiking trails, visitors center, exhibits,
amphitheater, gift shop (é).
Activities:Camping, hiking, cave tours, educational programs.
Special Features:The cave was discovered in 1974, but its existence did not become
public knowledge until its purchase was approved as an Arizona
State Park in 1988. A trained guide leads all tours of the cave, and
facilities at the park's Discovery Center include information on the
tours as well as interactive displays and a theater with a video
program. During the summer months, the cave's Big Room serves as a
nursery for about 1,000 female cave myotis bats.
