In south-central NE, southwest of Grand Island; original county; organized Jan 10, 1860 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Fort Kearny, itself named for Gen. Stephen Watts Kearny (1794-1848), officer in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. The e in the last syllable was added in 1857, reason unknown.
