Kearny, Lawrence

Kearny, Lawrence

(1789–1868) naval officer; born in Perth Amboy, N.J. He joined the navy in 1807 and became a captain in 1832. While commanding the East India Squadron (1840–42) he conducted diplomatic initiatives that led to the Open Door Policy and the first American-Chinese treaty (1844).
