Kickapoo State Recreation Area
Location:Vermilion County, near Danville; accessible via I-74.
Facilities:184 sites for tent and trailer camping (about half with electrical
hookups), a limited number of primitive walk-in sites, 2 shower
buildings, 12 boat ramps, boat and canoe rentals, concession,
restaurant, hiking and biking trails, 6 main picnic areas with
shelters, drinking water, and playground equipment, horse rentals.
Activities:Camping, boating (electric motors only), canoeing, fishing, hunting, scuba
diving, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding,
cross-country skiing, sledding, ice fishing, ice skating.
Special Features:Kickapoo State Recreation Area is apparently the first park in the
nation built on strip-mine land. Through the rejuvenative powers of
nature, a landscape once devastated by nearly a century of strip mining
now features 22 clear, deep-water ponds and thickly forested land that
provides habitat for a variety of birds, animals, and wildflowers.
