In east-central SD, northwest of Sioux Falls; created Jan 8, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Hanson County. Name Origin: For George Washington Kingsbury (1837-1925) and T.A. Kingsbury, brothers prominent in territorial affairs and members of several Territorial legislatures. George was a newspaper publisher and author of History of Dakota Territory.

In 2008, Richard Vendrig sought a permit to build a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) in Kingsbury County. The county zoning ordinances require CAFOs to be at least four miles away from incorporated areas unless the affected city waives the requirement.
