Captain Cook visited
Kiritimati - Christmas Island.
The United States (USA) conducted tests in the Marshall Islands (1946-1958) and on Johnston Atoll and Christmas (
Kiritimati) Island (1962), while the United Kingdom tested bombs in remote inland Australia (1952-1963) and on Christmas and Malden Islands (1957-1958), and the French at Moruroa and Fangataufa (1966-1992, 1995-1996).
Crew members on foreign fishing vessels in Kiribati or in its territorial waters around Tarawa and
Kiritimati Island allegedly exploit prostituted children, some reportedly as young as 14, in local hotels and aboard their vessels.
Figure 8 from
Kiritimati in the Line Islands, however, is an exception in lacking the narrow dark stripes ventrally on the body and in having numerous white spots (as well as bright yellow pectoral fins).
The Line Islands include both protected, unfished areas, such as Kingman Reef and the Palmyra atoll, and inhabited islands such as
Kiritimati (also known as Christmas).
In 1956, Mr Brook was posted to Christmas Island, now known as
Kiritimati. He left in 1957 after 12 months, having witnessed two nuclear weapon tests, but returned in 1958 and spent 12 months on Christmas Island witnessing a further three tests.
He added: "I always remember that on the air strip (on
Kiritimati) after one of the tests, we were shown a silent film of a nuclear explosion in Australia.
