Kjölen

an upland region in the northern part of the Scandinavian Mountains, in Sweden and Norway; situated between Trondheimsfjorden on the southwest and the Finnmark Plateau on the northeast. The region measures approximately 600 km in length and rises to a maximum elevation of 2,123 m at Mount Kebnekaise. It is composed primarily of gneisses, schists, and granites and is deeply dissected by river valleys. Glacial relief and lakes are typical, and glaciers are found. The vegetation is of the mountain-taiga and mountain-tundra type. Several national parks, among them Abisko, Stora Sjöfallet, and Sarek, are found in the region.
