Koraxoi

 

(Russian, Koraksy), the ancient Greek name for one of the West Georgian tribes. It was used by such ancient Greek writers as Hecataeus and Pseudo-Scylax (fifth to fourth centuries B.C.). Ptolemy (second century A.D.) referred to the Bzyb’ River as Korax, which places the Koraxoi in the western part of present-day Abkhazia. The name “Koraxoi” has been linked by some researchers to the name of the Colchians, some of whom were Koraxoi. By Arrian’s day (second century A.D.) the land of the Koraxoi was occupied by the Abkhazians, who had come down from the Northern Caucasus.
