Kufra, Al-

 

a group of oases and populated areas in southeast Libya in the muhafaza of Bengasi, in the middle of the Libyan Desert; population, approximately 4,000. Al-Kufra is a trade and transportation center on caravan routes leading from the Republic of Chad and the Sudan to north Libya; it is linked by highway with the port of Bengasi. Date palms, grains, and vegetables are grown. The main population centers are al-Jawf, al-Taj, Buema, and al-Tulaylib. Al-Kufra is an important religious center for the Muslim Sanusiya.
