1. a former state of W India, on the Gulf of Kutch (an inlet of the Arabian Sea): part of Gujarat state since 1960
2. Rann of. an extensive salt waste in W central India, and S Pakistan: consists of the Great Rann in the north and the Little Rann in the southeast; seasonal alternation between marsh and desert; some saltworks. In 1968 an international tribunal awarded about 10 per cent of the border area to Pakistan. Area: 23 000 sq. km (9000 sq. miles)

a gulf of the Arabian Sea on the northwestern coast ofIndia. The Gulf of Kutch extends for 165 km between the conti-nent and the Kathiawar Peninsula. The width of the gulf at itsentrance is approxmately 46 km, and its maximum depth is 38m. The shores of the gulf are low-lying and the southern shoreis bordered with coral reefs. Tides are semidiurnal, with a heightof more than 3 m. The port of Okha is located on the southern side of the entrance to the gulf.
