a sandy massif in China occupying the northern edge of the Ordos Plateau and the terraces above the bottom-lands of the right bank of the Hwang Ho; elevation, 1,100–1,700m. The massif is 370 km long and as much as 40 km wide. Its sands are as deep as 100 m. Shifting barchans, at elevations of 15–30 m, alternate with overgrown and semifixed sands. There are hollows with solonchaks and lakes and sectors of takyrs (clay-surfaced deserts). The eastern edge of the Kuzupchi has “singing sands.”
