Advances in liquid crystal display (
LCD) technology have made it ''a real possibility'' to eliminate cathode-ray tubes (CRT) from all television sets, Sharp Corp.

LCD (Table 1) appeared to be ionically clean.
All three products have a 4mm display, which NEC claims is the industry's thinnest in the transflective type of
LCDs. Other features include the display of 65,536 colours, crosstalk-free fluid moving picture display and power consumption of 5mW - the industry's lowest level for
LCDs, according to the company.
One of the most promising is the use of LEP panels as backlights for
LCDs. While initial implementations of LEP backlights will probably incorporate backlight and liquid crystal display in separate modules, manufacturers could ultimately deposit the LEP panel directly on the
LCD glass plate for a completely integrated unit with sizeable savings in weight and better illumination than conventional backlights.
Integrated in the unit is a Video Graphics Array (VGA) display port for attaching the
LCD panel.
