Leoben

 

a city in Austria, in Styria, on the Mur River. Population, including the suburbs and the city of Donawitz, approximately 50,000 (1970). Leoben is a transportation junction and an important center for heavy industry in the upper Styrian industrial region. In the 14th and 15th centuries it became an important center for the mining of iron ore. Local industries include a metallurgical combine (in Donawitz), various types of machine building, and cellulose and paper enterprises. Leoben has a mining and metallurgical academy.
