Lienau, Detlef

(1818–87) architect; born in Utersen, Germany. He emigrated to New York (1848), where he introduced the French Second Empire style and espoused neoclassicism throughout the mid-19th century. He helped found the American Institute of Architects (1857).

German-born American architect who designed in the eclectic style. He designed several large blocks of town-houses in New York City, including the Rebecca Jones group (1870), which were very influential in the 1870s and 1880s.
