Loiret

 

a department in France, in the basin of the upper Loire. Area, 6,800 sq km; population, 459,000 (1972). The prefecture is Orléans. Loiret is a major agricultural region, where grain and industrial crops are cultivated and meat and dairy cattle are raised. There is fruit growing and flower cultivation. Loiret has machine-building, wool, clothing, chemical, and food industries.
