Lombok

one of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It belongs to Indonesia. Its area totals 5,435 sq km (according to other sources, 4,729 sq km). In the north are mountains capped by the volcano Rinjani (3,726 m); in the central region there are hilly plains; and in the south, a limestone plateau that attains an altitude of 716 m.

Lombok has a subequatorial, monsoonal climate. The rainy season lasts from October to the end of March (the summer in the southern hemisphere). Savannas and sparse growths of trees predominate. Forests have been preserved high in the mountains. Rice, coffee, soybeans, peanuts, and tobacco are cultivated. There are deposits of lead and zinc ores. Mataram is the principal city.
