Long Island

an island in the Atlantic Ocean close to the US coastline near the mouth of the Hudson River. It is separated from the mainland by the East River and Long Island Sound. Area, 4,462 sq km. Length, approximately 200 km; width, 37 km.

Long Island is composed of loose marine and glacial deposits; the terrain is flat. There are numerous sand spits on the ocean side. The western portion is occupied by two boroughs of New York City (Brooklyn and Queens). The remainder has housing developments, parks, and beaches.

Discovered in 1609 by the English navigator H. Hudson, Long Island began to be settled by the Dutch in the 1620’s. Captured by the English in 1664, it became part of New York State after the American Revolution. A large portion of its native Indian population was exterminated by the colonizers.
