Lowden State Park
Location:Along the Rock River, just north of Oregon, in Ogle County.
Facilities:Individual and group campsites (limited electricity),
showers, concession stand, picnic areas, outdoor toilets, drinking
water, hiking trails (4 miles), boat ramp and docks (adjacent to the
park).
Activities:Camping, boating, water skiing, fishing, hiking. (Swimming in the river is not permitted.)
Special Features:Park features a 50-foot-tall concrete-reinforced statue of a Native
American that towers above the Rock River on the bluffs north of
Oregon. Although the sculptor, Lorado Taft, dedicated the statue to
Native Americans, it has become most commonly associated with Chief
Black Hawk. According to legend, as he was leaving the area after the
Black Hawk War, the Sauk warrior talked of the great beauty of
the Rock River Valley and admonished his captors to care for the land
as his people had.
