In 1970, 20,000 people were employed in industry. Industrial equipment is manufactured in the city, and radio-electronics, textile, clothing, leather footwear, and printing industries are located there. In the second half of the 19th century, Lowell was the most important textile center in the USA (“the American Manchester”); a textile institute is in the city.
