Maardu

 

an urban-type settlement in the Estonian SSR. It is located on the Gulf of Finland, 14 km from the Ulemiste railroad station and 20 km east of Tallinn. Population, 7,000 (1970). It has a chemical combine, which produces mineral fertilizers.

The complete sedimentation cycle formed during the Ancylus transgression (from the beginning up to the culmination) can be followed in a few coastal lake sequences (Maardu, Ulemiste, Mustjarv, and Ermistu) and in some buried sequences (Polluotsa, Lope, and Kodu), which register the transgression event quite clearly.
