Germline mutations in ETV6 are associated with thrombocytopenia, red cell
macrocytosis and predisposition to lymphoblastic leukemia.
A total of 9,527 blood counts were ordered, and 287 (3%) had
macrocytosis. (1) Further work-up was done for 113 of the patients.
Macrocytosis, mild anemia, and delay in the diagnosis of pernicious anemia.
It can cause
macrocytosis and megaloblastic changes in bone marrow which in turn can lead to ineffective erythropoiesis and pancytopenia [90-92] Mammalian MTOR inhibitors causes post-transplant anemia [93] Target of via impair metabolism and absorption [94, 95].
The MCV reveals the size of the cells, leading to the classification of normocytosis, microcytosis or
macrocytosis and indicating potential causes.
In a case series of 141 patients with a broad array of neurologic and psychiatric symptoms associated with vitamin BJ2 deficiency, 40 (28%) patients had no anemia or
macrocytosis. (2)
Pernicious anemia: The expected findings of very low serum cobalamin levels, anemia, and
macrocytosis are often lacking.
MCV was found to be significantly increased (P=0.041) in arsenic-treated rats compared to that of control, suggesting
macrocytosis. Hematocrit (P=0.999) and other red blood cell indices viz.
Basic investigations revealed, haemoglobin, 10.5 g/dL, with
macrocytosis, normal white cell count, and normal inflammatory markers.
However, due to frequent and concomitant presence of IDA in patients with CD,
macrocytosis is unusual [4].
The classic hematological finding in pernicious anemia consists of megaloblastic anemia, characterized by
macrocytosis and hypersegmented neutrophils on peripheral smear [2628].
The CD4 count was 48 cells/[mm.sup.3]; full blood count showed leucopenia with a total white blood cell count of 1600/[mm.sup.3] with 992 neutrophils/[mm.sup.3], a hemoglobin of 13 g/dL with
macrocytosis (MCV = 115 fl), and thrombocytopenia with a platelet count of 92,000/[mm.sup.3].
