Except for the 3490, 3590
Magstar, 4mm and 8mm tapes and drives, magnetic media have an established track record of reliability when compared with optical media.
"And the
Magstar Tape Library provided us with the price point and speed that EMC doesn't offer."
The entry-level model supports one or two drives with 20
Magstar MP linear-tape cartridges for 300Gb of storage, while the largest model supports up to six drives with 324 cartridges for 4.8Tb of storage.
Meanwhile, IBM has been measuring the performance of its
Magstar tape drives against the 9840 models introduced at the end of last year.
The LTO design is derived from the
Magstar and has a long history of reliability and performance.
IBM still currently sells StorageTek's Shared Virtual Array disk products under the
Magstar name, but entered the market with its own Shark products earlier this month and plans to end the StorageTek OEM relationship by the end of next year.
In addition, IBM
Magstar tape products can now connect in a SAN using the IBM SAN Data Gateway, allowing them to support the sharing of tape drives within a SAN.
Currently, the top 20% of high-end AS/400 users - StorageTek's prime targets - are using IBM
Magstar drives.
In addition to LTO technology, HIARC also supports the following tape technologies: 4mm (DAT), 8mm, 3480/3490, AIT, DLT,
Magstar, MLR, SLR, VHS, D1/D2/D5, and half-inch reel-to-reel.
Plasmon has a range of automated tape library products based on IBM's fast-access
MagStar technology and has just launched its own range of half-inch tape storage which is backwards compatible with older traditional tape formats.
VSM was introduced last year, a full year later than IBM Corp's competing
Magstar Virtual Tape Server.
