Mohicans

an Algonquian-speaking Indian tribe in North America.

Before white colonization, approximately 3,000 Mohicans lived in the Hudson Valley, farming, hunting, and gathering. In the early 17th century, the Mohicans were drawn into the fur trade, which led to disintegration of their tribal structure. Most of the Mohicans were exterminated as a result of white colonization and raids by the Iroquois.

After several resettlements in the 19th century, the remaining Mohicans, approximately 300 persons, were settled on the Stock-bridge Reservation in Wisconsin, with the Munsee, who were remnants of the Delaware group; in 1965, the combined total population was approximately 600. The Mohicans speak English and are Christians.

The Esopus settlers saw Fort Orange alcohol traders as detrimental to their survival and Fort Orange and Rensselaerswijck residents felt removed from the events in Esopus as most of their dealings with the native population involved the Mohawks and the Mahicans. In contrast, the Mohawks did not necessarily see the two Dutch communities as separate.

Given that Edwards had to rely on a translator to convey his message, he no doubt attempted to simplify his delivery and avoid complex constructions that he believed would be difficult to render in Mahican, for Edwards believed that "there are not many good philosophers" among the American Indians.
