Mahler, Margaret Schoenberger

Mahler, Margaret Schoenberger

(1897–1985) psychoanalyst; born in Sopron (Oedenburg), Hungary. She studied medicine at the German universities of Munich, Heidelberg, and Jena (M.D. 1922), then founded the first psychoanalytic child guidance clinic in Vienna. Married to psychiatrist Paul Mahler in 1925, she left Austria with him to settle in New York City (1938). She was best known for her pioneer work on childhood schizophrenia and the individuation process.
