Makassar Strait

 

a strait between the islands of Borneo (Kalimantan) and Celebes, joining the Celebes Sea in the north and the Java Sea in the south. Length, approximately 500 km; width, about 200 km; and depths, to 2,458 m. The currents are monsoonal. Ports along the strait are Balikpapan (on Borneo) and Ujung Pandang (on Celebes).

More importantly, it has extended financial assistance to the littoral states to improve maritime domain awareness capabilities in the Straits including the provision of five coastal radar surveillance stations situated along the Indonesia side of the Strait (and seven in the Makassar Strait and Celebes Sea).
One of its legacy programs in maritime security is a chain of radar stations along the entire length of the Strait of Malacca and a similar surveillance system for the Makassar Strait. Earlier Pertamina said it wants to have a stake of at least 10% in the Makassar Strait Block, which will have a production capacity of up to 800 million cubic feet of gas a per day.
