Mariel

 

city and port in western Cuba; population, 6,700 (1965). Mariel is a transportation junction. The Maximo Gomez thermoelectric power station, with an output of 200,000 kW, was constructed there with the help of the USSR to supply the Havana area with electric power. Major industries are a cement works and fishing.
