Marj, Al-

 

(Italian, Barca), a city in Libya. Population, 10,600 (1964). A highway junction, al-Marj is the center of an agricultural region known for the cultivation of oiive trees and grains and for the raising of livestock. It has a food-processing industry that manufactures olive oil, flour, macaroni, and meat products. The city was founded in the sixth century B.C.
